The Apprenticeship Levy
What employers need to know:
- New Apprenticeship Standards: Designed by employers to replace existing frameworks.
- Employer Contributions: Non-levy paying employers (around 98%) contribute 5% towards apprenticeship training costs; the Government funds the remaining 95%.
- Funding Bands: 15 bands created for apprenticeship frameworks and new standards.
- Contribution Range: Employer contributions range from £150 to £2,700, depending on apprenticeship type and level.
- Small Employers: Employers with fewer than 50 employees can train 16-18 year old apprentices without any contribution; the Government covers 100% of training costs.
- Employer Involvement: Employers can play a key role in developing new apprenticeship standards.
- Apprenticeship Levy: In place since Spring 2017; funds appear in digital accounts just before the end of May for levy paid on April payroll.
- Levy Details: Employers with an annual payroll over £3 million pay 0.5% of their wage bill towards the levy.
- Digital Vouchers: Levy-paying employers receive £15,000 in funding for apprenticeship training as a digital voucher, usable for training new and existing staff with no age limit.
