Building a robust skill system that responds to local needs and national economic priorities

The TTE Technical Institute hosted a skills roundtable discussion event together with Policy Connect and the Learning and Work Institute.

The event was attended by leading local industry and skills and training professionals, with the joint task of exploring the development of a responsive national skills system, which understands local needs as well as national economic priorities. The intention of the discussion was to build a successful and resilient skills system that joins up fragmented policies under a common vision.

Evidence was collected from the participants to inform the inquiry Future of the Skills System, undertaken jointly by Learning and Work Institute and Policy Connect and funded by the Further Education Trust for Leadership.

The discussion was chaired by Fiona Aldridge, Director of Policy and Research, Learning and Work Institute. The discussion covered themes including the desired skills systems and the efficacy of the current system.

The participants also discussed future opportunities and challenges in the delivery of an effective skills system.

Firstly, the discussions framed the key features of a successful skills ecosystem and the interaction of different organisations, outlining the role of employers, digital infrastructure and how to mitigate social inequality in response to individual needs.

Further questions explored the delivery performance of the existing systems and if the national provider base functions in a way to support a future robust skill system that can support local requirements at a national economic level.
